Setting up your betta fish tank is a lot of fun. Using live aquatic plants instead of fake plants is not only attractive but healthy.
However, toxicity is one drawback of using live plants versus plastic plants for betta fish. Some houseplants are toxic, especially if your fish nibble at the plant roots.
It is safest to purchase suitable plants from aquatic plant nurseries.
1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
The pothos, or money plant, is a popular houseplant easily grown in water. While the stems and leaves are technically dangerous due to insoluble calcium oxalates, the roots are safe.
Since bettas do not eat plants and are carnivorous, they’ll be fine.
If they’re hungry enough to nibble on a pothos plant, you’re not feeding them enough and these toxic plants can cause irritation and swelling in the mouth and throat.

Better for Your Betta
Fortunately, there are many betta-safe plants to choose from for your aquarium.
Go with an aquatic plant safe for your aquaria, such as Anubias plants or betta bulbs. These are good plants for beginners.
It is better not to use non-aquatic plants or common house plants in your betta fish tank as many contain toxins that harm your betta fish.
